A QUICK INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Joyscroll Studio. I’m Ben Mills, a working Director of Photography and co-founder of Joyscroll.

I’ve spent 15 years behind the lens, shooting everything from feature films and Tv Pilots, to high-pressure commercial campaigns for clients like Lego, Xbox, and The Economist. I've worked with hundreds of actors, and I've noticed one recurring theme: brilliant performers often freeze up the moment the technical realities of a professional set kick in.

My goal here isn't to teach you how to act, you already know how to do that. My goal is to teach you how to be shot.

Walking onto a set with broadcast cameras, complex lighting grids, and strict marks to hit can feel incredibly daunting. I want to demystify that machinery for you. When you truly understand the frame you're working in and how to collaborate with the camera, the technical anxiety vanishes. That is when you can finally relax, take risks, and let your best performance shine through the lens.

BOOK A CLASS

Frequently asked questions

When Will I get My Script?

You will get your script at least 3 days before class. This gives you enough time to be off book and camera ready for class.

Do I Need To Have Spotlight?

It helps us if you have a spotlight or a mandy in order to showcase your showreel, so we can give you a script that doesn't just challenge you, but complements you. As this class isn't just for experienced professionals, if you don't have any materials we will provide you with a script that helps us and yourself understand what works for you.

What Happens In Class?

You will be given a technical run through of what is going to happen in your scene, and we will go for a take.

You will then be given some direction for the scene and we will run it once again. You will be given some notes to really work on, and later in the class you will come back for a final take.

How Many People Will I Be On Camera With?

You will film your scenes in a one-shot to begin with, but if we've given someone in the class the opposite character in the same scene, and we feel you will benefit from a two-shot, we will go for a take with two people on camera.

Will I Get My Footage?

We will aim to get the footage to you within 48 hours. Once you get the footage, you will have a week to download it before it's deleted.
